“The Abstinence Teacher”
There’s been a good deal of buzz over a new novel by Tom Perrotta, “The Abstinence Teacher.” The book follows describes a sex education teacher’s unsatisfying role as a sex education teacher. Her liberal views lead to opposition by local evangelicals. The book is also being made into a movie, due for release in 2008.

Hi Joyce,
Yes, Perratta’s book has gotten a lot of attention, and I have it on my To Read Soon list. I agree with you that sex education is important for many reasons — especially that I am now a parent of a teenager
Another great new novel I just read about sex education (set in NJ in the 1980’s) is by Stuart Nachbar — “The Sex Ed Chronicles.” It was inspired by real-life events when the state Board of Ed in NJ made sex ed mandatory in public schools. It also involves a journalist covering the story who becomes interested in one of the outspoken teachers there. Anyway, it is a very interesting, parent-friendly read on a controversial topic. Every parent concerned about their child’s education should read The Sex Ed Chronicles.
Thanks for your interesting blog — I’ll be checking back again.
Cheers,
Linda
